Creative Title

I can never come up with a creative title to start my blog post so the reason for Creative Title…hahahaha.

Another week begins and autumn is finally here with cool crisp mornings and warm afternoon with squirrels and jaybirds dropping acorns all over the place..leaves are falling as well and a little color in the forest…

We planted turnip greens a week ago and watered them to get them up and then gave them a shot of fertilizer and they are really growing so it won’t be long before we get to eat some.

img_3141

We planted a different type this year instead of the purple tops and we didn’t plant as many either….no one else in our family likes them but us..

Finally got a photo of the fountain we fixed for the she-shed patio area. SIL gave it to us and told us it just needed new tubing..but seems the pump was bad as water had leaked out and burned up the motor…think maybe water was left in it over the winter…We used flexsteel to try to fix it…well their commercial is wrong…wound up using silicone gel to fix instead…

img_20160923_105713646_hdr

Hubby and I drove up to Mount Ida to pay our taxes and get a hair cut. We stopped at a new place to eat…we were so surprised. I used to be an old grocery store so the building is huge..they have tables all around and a long long bar with stools on either side down the center. They have a small fleamarket the the left as  you go in along with some game tables and pool table…they also have a stage area that is raised and have a band every Saturday night…Most of the bands are gospel, bluegrass and blues…and such wonderful people own and run the place…We ordered the shrimp platter with Cajun fries and was almost more than we could eat and was only $7.50 including the iced tea. If you are ever in the area drop by and check them out.

Our spider lilies have bloomed better than I’ve ever seen them this year…think all the summer rains we had helped.

img_20160927_083658000

These spider lilies got me to thinking about trying to buy some hybrid day lilies. I want to put in a new small flower bed with nothing but them..at the end of the iris bed.

Well that’s all the news this time…

And as always….

Autumn is here!!!! And FREEBIES!!!

For the last few days we have had glorious temps and crisp dry days…leaves are falling and turning their usual fall colors. I just so enjoy this time of year except for the allergies to rag weed….this too shall pass…

Sonny and I drove up into the hills this morning early. He had found a mushroom or fungus growing at the base of a big tree. I thought it was one of those tough woody kinds but it was softer and damp like a regular mushroom. We cut it off and brought it home to try to dry it and use it for décor. It measured 18 inches in diameter…HUGE!!!

img_3136

O how I love things in God’s natural world. I’m really hoping it dries to save.

Been busy with the needle in hand…finally got some photos taken..

Church themed table runner and topper.

img_3118

Chrinoline lady days of the week flour sack towels.

I finally got around to photographing the last rug I hooked…It is a Chestnut junction pattern I enlarged.

img_3116

I have several more of her patterns to draw up. I also got my new primitive magazine and it has several punching patterns I want to enlarge for hooking.

Now I’m working on some Scotty dog embroidery and make into a baby quilt or so.

Freebies and a few things

I’ve been extra busy lately. I finished the quilt top for one of the granddaughters for her Christmas this year. I cut up the left over fabric into 2 inch squares and am sewing up 9 patch blocks from it. I should have enough to make another full quilt. I got the quilt top to the local quilt shop to be quilted. I do NOT like to hand quilt and my machine is too hard to roll up the large king/queen size I make so it is without hassle to take to the shop. Photos will come on it when I get it back.

I finally had to call the plant nursery I ordered the vines from that will go in planter boxes by pergola at the she-shed. I should get 4 by the 1st or 2nd week of October and the other 2 by the end of October.

This is what I ordered:

Carolina Jasmine

0001-carolina-jasmine-vine-gelsemium-sempervirens

It will bloom early spring

Chocolate vine:

chocolate_vine_akebia_2

It should bloom early summer up into summer.

And the autumn jasmine:

sweet_autumn_clematis

The autumn jasmine is on back order.

I can hardly wait to get them planted and hope we have a good bloom next year.

Our neighbor across the road has percheron horses…they aren’t as big as the belgiums or clydedales but still are good size work horses.

He has a herd of them along with a herd of cattle.

Ok now for the freebies…

river into lake and other things

We made a trip over to a small town about an hours drive away to pick up some NUT GRUB. It is a deer feed that a local mill makes. We bought 50lbs for deer lure for hunting season which opens in about a month. Not sure what is in it but cheaper than other deer feed by far. Think we were told there were peanuts, acorns, corn and sweet feed…But Sonny will see how it works.

This is one brand but this mill mixes their own..

While on our way over there, we drove the back roads that leads near Lake DeGray and Caddo River access…and so we stopped and took pictures.

This is looking both directions of the river. The one on the left is looking towards the lake.

Also while driving through the back roads, we came across a church in an area called Sweet Home…love old churches.

img_3086

The Sweet Home cemetary was across the road.

img_3090

I love old cemetarys as well…the older the better. There is one in our area I want to go back with large paper and charcoal and make rubbings of some of the head stones.

Anyway it was a fun day just taking our time and viewing some sites we hadn’t seen before. ….

She shed finish and freebie!!!

Well we finished the patio area of the she-shed. I love it…We built a pergola and have ordered some vines to go in the planter boxes on either side. We still have the fountain to repair so it isn’t in the photo.

Now all we need is company.

**************************************

We decided to try to fight the squirrels and other critters in our persimmon tree. The squirrels were already leaving bite marks in the green persimmons. So this is what we did.

img_3061

Those are carpet tack strips…And the persimmons are finally ripening…

img_3062

If the carpet tack strips work, then we plan to put them on all our fruit trees next spring.

Not sure if I mentioned but our little house doggie died about a month ago. We really miss her and are always looking for her. It has just been too sad to mention sooner. First time in 37 years that we haven’t had a dog inside.

late flood photos and other things…FREEBIE

Well I had not taken time to put my flood pictures up here a week ago so thought I would share now…a little late but ok.

I have alot more but won’t bore you with them all…

This week has been much slower since the gardening is over. So Sonny took time to process some deer meat with pork and beef to make hamburger and sausage. We got 10 tubes of sausage and 15 of burger. It is very very lean and much better for you than most store bought. We do this every year. This was from deer in our freezer from last hunting season. This years hunt is coming up soon.

IMG_3053

We have also begun the patio area at the she-shed. So far we have the pad poured in concrete and the upright poles..working on the pergola part today. I also ordered 6 vines. 2 each of carolina jasmine, autumn jasmine and chocolate vine. There will be long planter boxes on either side of the patio area.

Over a week and freebie

It has been over a week since I’ve put up anything new here. Been so busy. We had major flooding last weekend with over 7 inches in one day. Our garden is pretty well history.

That makes our total for August over 20 inches. It has sure made the toadstools pop up and the moss is staying green.

**********************************

We made a trip down to the southeastern part of the state on Monday to visit Sonny’s sister and family. While there we managed to visit our friend who is in chemo therapy right now. The sister and her husband are having health issues as is her daughter.

***********************************

My sister called last week and is having problems with their son…just not a good situation. I have really been praying a lot for all these families.

***********************************

After our trip down south, we have been putting the finishing touches on the she-shed/apartment. Sonny got the table built and painted and also the old chest of drawers painted as well. The SIL gave me a new shower curtain and some rugs. Sonny is installing a new plug fixture on the wall where I plan to put my spare computer.

We have begun fixing the patio area by the door of the she-shed. The SIL gave me a great green wicker patio set. So far we have the bones of the trellis and planter boxes fixed and then will pour concrete. The SIL also gave us a fountain. We have to put in new tubing is all.

IMG_20160823_130746102

The only produce we have left are muscadine grapes. I cooked down a big pot yesterday and will strain them and put the juice in the freezer to make jelly later on. In the spare time, I’ve been working on some hand embroidery. Mainly flour sack towels with days of the week designs. They will be Christmas gifts. I also picked up some more fabric and plan to begin one of the grands her quilt for Christmas. Her colors are aqua and silver. It has been hard finding fabric to match. The DIL brought over the blues and I’ve been matching the silvers. She decided on a log cabin pattern.

another freebie

Before I put up the new freebie design, I just wanted to share a few things. First I have had only one “naked lady” lily to bloom. Only one…strange as I usually have a bunch. But here she is in all her glory.

IMG_20160804_153924272

I also realized I had not put up the photo of the outside of the apartment/she-shed. We still have the concrete patio are to pour and the trellis. We plan to make a trip next week to visit Sonny’s sister who is gifting me with a wicker patio set.

IMG_20160806_131724582_HDR

While meandering around this area I happened upon a walking stick bug on the angel wing. I think they are such fascinating bugs.

Sad things and Just things

Well our gardening is winding down. We just have muscadines and figs left. We have to beat the birds to the figs. We did wind up getting enough pears to make 6 pints of preserves. The pesky squirrels got the rest. We plan to put a corn feeder up and hunt the buggers this autumn. Maybe we can reduce the population.

squirrel

I think this is what they look like since they robbed us of most of our fruit this year.

We have had so much rain lately…seems we get a shower or a downpour every day. So with this much rain and cooler temps, our tomatoes have just quit producing. We haven’t  had the flooding that Louisiana has had but it has been a wet summer.

****************************************

Last Thursday night our little doggie baby died. We have had her 9 years and she was a rescue dog from a puppy mill. We really miss her but have decided not to get another house dog for a long time. This will be the first time without a house dog since we have been married (37years). So it is going to take some getting used to.

IMG_20160217_175138285

RIP Gracie!!!!

**************************

An update on the apartment/she-shed. Hubby finished my chest of drawers and we swapped them out. He is now refinishing the old one in white to go into the apartment. He is also building a small table to match the 2 stools we recovered.

IMG_20160812_130139046

I just love how whimsical they look. The old white table in the photo will go into my yard sale coming up this autumn.

************************

On a crafty note…I have used some iron-on transfers to do some more towels for embroidery. Atwoods had a great sale last week so we went over and I bought more flour sack towels. I got the aprons fused for applique and will be working on all these projects the next few weeks. All will be Christmas gifts. Speaking of transfers…here is a freebie vintage design for  you.

Hope you enjoy this week!!! And as always!!!
